spring 2020 - 2 weeks

The goal of this project is to create a place to eat. The first step in this project was to explore materials. I got to work with wood (mass blocks and sticks), as well as corrugated plastic. I was able to create study models based on every material. Along the way I learned new techniques to bring out the best of each material. I found the corrugated plastic model really interesting. This iteration was made from one piece of corrugated plastic in a specific geometrical shape. This concept will carry on to my final design but in a more organized way.

a design worth mentioning: This design was created with wooden sticks and a wooden circle. I couldn’t find any use for the circle, so I decided to cut into four quarters. Then an idea came to me where I can make those pieces slide in together, just like a sliding a door, but with a curve. This model was created with symmetry, and one problem I was faced with was space. The interior of this model was too simple and small in surface area. The mechanism of this model opens and closes by sliding the two curved pieces against each other. I didn’t carry on with this iteration for my final model, but I was able to find intersting oatterns with the shape of the walls and the roof. The circulation inside this model also gave me an insight of what I wanted my place to feel like. This concept also had different entrances and exits, which are crucial for my final model, as well as the next project.

for the final design, My place to eat consists of six pieces, two are for services such as the cashier and display, and the other four are for dining . The final design shares characteristics from previous iterations such as multiple entrances. The design itself is simple to look at and comprehend. With different apertures and light sources around the place, the place is pretty much open from every direction, which gives a sense of freedom for the consumer. The prototype also opens and closes by swinging the roof vertically up and down.
